Phase 4The mini search
Equipment
- 2 identical pots, but only one containing fresh target scent
Method
Can be fiddly so practice without dog first!
- Hold pots in hands and offer both to dog at same time
- When they sniff the pot with target scent, click and reward
- Ignore false indications (when they sniff the incorrect pot)
- Switch hands
- Keep repeating!
- Eventually you will see the dog actively making a choice
This is very brain-power intensive for our dogs, so ensure we give them plenty of rest and water breaks.
Start to drop your scent pots into different containers – pipes, flower pots, magnetic tins and see which ones they find easiest/most challenging.
