Hey guys. Scent award is great idea for you guys!

Will work through your questions as they are wrote:

    1. The online handbook is the up to date one for the names of the logs, I believe some of the older handbooks may use terms such as training plans- but I believe that are the same log 🙂 About the scent questions, I believe that is a mistake, I can’t find any questions in my old handbook or online, but will ask the team to confirm this 🙂

    2. What to stick to, will depend on what you are doing. If you are just following scent award for now- using food will be enough to complete the award 🙂

But if your expanding to scent detector, scent collector- then could look at progress into using scent or toys for the different activities. And keeping it separate then.

    3. In scent detector, the idea is the dog is passively searching for the odour, this is where using a scent works well, rather than food. Using something like gun oil, teabag, catnip etc, as we want to the dog to passively indicate on the article/scent, then we reward for them doing so- this is where the food comes in- as the reward. Think of this search as we don’t want the dog to touch the item- an example in working dogs- want them to smell the mine- but not touch it, for example. Hope that helps answer that one.

    4. The advantage of using toys will depend on what course you are doing, and each dog. Some dogs find toy more rewarding that food- so can be rewarded that way. But, in course such as scent collector, where we are doing active searches, to get the dog to find the hidden scent- which the toy has been sat in, and scent soaked in to it- so it smell of the scent. Which then the dog actively goes and finds the toy- can collects it-so touches this one, unlike detector.

    5. If we using toy being soaked in jar- it stays in jar with the scent, and only comes out as we hiding to search, minimally handling by use. If you do go on to scent collector/detector- this is explained more. For scent award, don’t worry about it 🙂

    6. The online handbook in the scent award, is the most recent one, It says, your not required to do 00k9, but you may want to try if done some before- if you do, make sure to only increase once D at a time 🙂

Hope this helps clear up some of your questions for now, let us know if any more 🙂
